At the start of an analysis of medicines, active substances and excipients, first of all there is identity testing. It is a step that is specified by all the pharmacopoeias, but which is of course also important for foodstuffs. The identity testing of herbal material at PhytoLab is therefore comprehensive – and based on our many years of experience:

From pharmacognostic to phytochemical

In the pharmacognostic examination, the macroscopic and microscopic features of the sample are compared visually with authentic reference material – and recorded using modern video documentation. For reliable identity testing of even rare plants, PhytoLab has a comprehensive collection of reference drugs, including from the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In addition to macroscopic and microscopic examinations, the organoleptic testing of odour and taste is also an important parameter. Furthermore, within the scope of phytochemical examinations we test the specimens for characteristic constituents – by means of photometry, thin-layer chromatography, gas chromatography and high-pressure liquid chromatography.
