Medicinal mushrooms

Background:

Beta-glucans comprise a heterogeneous group of polysaccharides that,
among other things, are found in the cell walls of fungi, yeasts, cereals and microalgae [1,2]. For medicinal mushrooms containing high levels of
beta-glucans, such as reishi, shiitake, maitake or cordyceps, positive effects, e.g., on the immune system [3], cholesterol levels [4] and the regulation of blood sugar [5], have been reported. Medicinal mushrooms are becoming increasingly important in nutrition and health research as a result of these health-promoting effects [4]. Precise quantitation of beta-glucans is therefore essential for reliable determination of the quality and value of medicinal mushrooms and preparations obtained from them, such as extracts.

Innovative method for sophisticated products

PhytoLab has established an innovative enzymatic method for determination of beta-glucans in fungi, yeasts and extracts, which permits precise and reliable analysis. This is a fully validated method, which offers a means of quantitating beta-glucans within a wide working range. PhytoLab checks and documents the suitability of the method for your product on the basis of a product-specific verification procedure, if required.

Our service for you

PhytoLab offers quantitative determination of beta-glucans in fungi and yeasts. We would be happy to advise you with respect to your raw materials, extracts and finished products on an individual basis.
PhytoLab also offers identification testing and content quantitation for other fungal active secondary substances in accordance with the current European Pharmacopoeia (Ph.Eur.) and US Pharmacopoeia (USP) monographs.
Our Regulatory Affairs team and Medical Affairs experts can advise you on issues relating to the marketability, labelling and safety of your mushroom products.
