Micronutrients

Vitamins and minerals – maybe a little more?

Legally compliant maximum levels still constitute the “missing link” in a harmonised Single European Market for food supplements containing vitamins and minerals. But the long-stagnating regulatory process is gradually gaining momentum. This is underlined by new EFSA safety assessments, as well as the EU Commission’s stakeholder hearing held on 20 May 2025.

Your development – our challenge

Your marketing department gives you the target group, claim and dosage form. So far, so good. But

•  Which nutrient compound is most suitable?
•  Which offers the best bioavailability?
•  Which can be procured reliably with the requisite quality?
•  Which measurement tolerances are acceptable for analysis?
•  Is a stability allowance required and how much is permissible?

And finally:

•  Which maximum quantities are accepted for the target group(s) in the target markets?

An increasingly challenging question due to the lack of legally binding limits, along with the dynamics of assessments conducted by EFSA or national institutions, such as BfR (Germany) or ANSES (France).
